Aug 5th '90 Gilman Colo -- Dear Pater & Folks --

    I didn't have time to write to you Sunday -- Last Friday we were expecting a crisis in our meetings, when along came a Phrenologist & Lecturer & Reciter & Comic Singer and &c and engaged our Hall for four nights --
    We were paying nothing for the use of the Hall and only had it on condition that no one else wanted it.  So we had to rustle for a Hall -- we could not get the school house, the only other good place because 1 of the 3 directors said that it was a "district school house" and so long as he had his say it should be used for no other purpose.  Then we tackled the saloon keeper, Dunham, who owns an old Hall called 'Union Hall" formerly used as a saloon, with no chairs in it and dirty as an old smoking car -- Dunham gave us the key and said -- "Yes, use it as long as you want to."  The lumber for the new church is on the ground so we used that with some chairs which the saloon keeper lent us & made benches of it.
    The obstinate School Trustee condecended to give us the use of a doz. chairs from the School House and so we had a hall -- While we were at work a young fellow came in, asked what we were about & then went out and got 4 lamps for us.
