71 Thursday the 17th Took my first Italian lesson from Signore Ameligne, with Allen, Mary & Selina--wrote some of the exercises down & immediately after dinner went to St Pierre to hear some music with which I was enchanted. there were about 15 men on the left side of the altar 3 or four of which sung most charmingly there were on the right side about a dozen voices all of which were chorus or bass but all together it was so pleasant to listen to & I think if it had not been for the standing up all the time which we had to do, I should have liked to stay & listen to them much longer; the Cardinal bishop of Rome led the service for it was Mass came back by Hotel to see Mrs Scott after tea learned some of the Italian verbs; the children played at whist had a reed? I went to bed very late
