52 Thursday 27 Bologna -- Got up very late & breakfasted at half past 9 -- went to the Academia delle belle Arti which is not very extensive though it is thought by many to contain the finest collection of paintings in Italy -- those which I thought most of was the Massacre of the Innocents by Guido also these two pictures were most beautiful so very natural many other very pretty ones which it would take too long to mention the Artists was born at this place -- thence to the cathedral where there was nothing worthy of notice; then to St Petronio built in 1132 & repaired in 1390, it is remarkable as being the place in which Charles the 5th emperor of Germany was crowned by Clement 7th it also contains the celebrated Meridian of Capini the gnomon of which is eighty three feet in height
