a little money in his pocket. It wasn't always for money loan he they came in. I have seen several come in to hand Charlie a payment either in full or partial, probably principally to keep his audit good. I would make a guess, tho, that most of the pages in his account book showed the money going out much more often and larger than the money coming in. I often have wished that his account book had been saved. It would be very interesting. There were several pages of investments in oil stock which seldom had given a return. He told me of several which he still thought would amount to something. That was a time when Eastern Kansas was booming with gas and oil discoveries and such towns as Iola were bringing in smelters and other factories which came to enjoy cheap gas fuel. The prospects for gas and oil even went out into Western Kansas where Charlie was part owner of quite a little acreage only to be lost when hard times came. I am afraid Charlie always had a feeling he had worked a lot without being recompensed properly like his many years in the flour mill, and I know he felt during many of his last years at Lawrence that he was taken advantage of. I don't know for sure, but I think there were many months when the business didn't leave enough for his small salary and he went without even tho Wilder had enough to support his riding horse and a good living. Sometimes, but not often, I heard him speak quite bitterly.' I think maybe the family owed him more than most of us know and I suppose probably I owed him more than the others as I lived in his room for 4 years and some of the time he paid for many of my meals. When I came home one night, Sept. 14, 1903 and told him I had just "popped the question to Clara" the only remark I got from him was "Has she got good teeth?" She did have and still has, which is more than I can say about her husband. I think Charlie got to like Clara very much as when we lived in Topeka some 6 months, he very frequently came up for Sunday to see us. During my last year at KU, I boarded at what was called The Que Vera Club and my savings from the summer's work
