Journal Across the Plains in 1859

Sunday, April 17

Clear sunshiny spring like day. Started at 10 o'clock. Left Hopeville one mile to our right. Arrived at Grand River ferry in 4 miles after noon. After a while we woke up the ferryman so rods? from the river on the opposite side. Brown and Hungerfirds? put their 4 yoke of oxen in first and pulled them over. Then their 2 wagons the next load. Then came our turn with unclear made 4 yoke, but the ferry was leaking all the time and our oxen sunk it and the oxen went off head first into the river and swam across all right.
