Thursday Dec 31 1874 The last day of the year - Cold & severe Mercury nearly frozen - Baxter & Wilson two of the British soldiers came down at dark on their way to Ft Kipp. It was windy & blustery . snow filled the air so that it was impossible to see 100 yds - We tried to persuade them from going tonight and insisted upon their stopping till morning but they persisted in going - I followed them outside & told them they would get lost & freeze to death on the plain but it was no use . they set out & in a day or two both were found dead . perished rather than take the advice of those who knew more about travelling in the snow than they
