SCHOFIELD, Decbr. 4. 1874. Major Schofield, 10th Cavy. Commdg. Detachment Enroute to Fort Richardson, Texas. Major,

On receipt of this, you will turn over the Command of your detachment to the Officer next in rank and return yourself to this post. Bring back the wagons containing your own baggage.
                                                                Very respectfully, Major,
                                                                Your obdt. servant
                                                        (Sgd) C. C. Augur
                                                                    Brig. General
                                                                    Commanding

Your dispatches of December first and second just received. Have not heard from MacKenzie, but believe his command to be unfit for further work now, and think it should be drawn in at once to recuperate. He can have a fresh Command ready by last of February. Meanwhile I can establish the Camp on McClellan Creek from this post. Schofield with four good Cavalry Companies and two of Infantry can leave here between fifteenth and twentieth, with thirty days supplies, adn with more if teams can be had from Contractors or can be hired.
I send this by messenger, who should reach Caddo Monday. I will be there Tuesday ready for your answer. Supplies must be sent from Camp Supply to meet this command, as I do not think we can depend upon our contractor for much.
                                                                                  (Sgd) C. C. Augur
                                                                                            Brig. Gen'l
