67 149. HARWELL, [left margin] February 10. 1873. Mr. G. W. Harwell, Centre Point, Kerr Co., Texas. Dear Sir:

Your letter of Febry. 6. has been received. You may rest assured, that I will make every possible effort to recover the young girl, "Mattie Cranford", recently captured by Indians. The Indians concerned in this affair, are undoubtedly those, who have been passing the winter in Mexico, and I will endeavor to interest the Mexican Officials in her recovery.
The papers here stated that, a few days since, a small party of Indians had been defeated near Uvalde, and a young girl retaken from them. Can this be the young girl you refer to?
If you have any information on this point, please inform me before I take further steps.
                                                                                                  Very respectfully
                                                                                                   Your obdt. servant

I have reliable information that the Kickapoos and Pottawatomies in Mexico are now anxious to return to their people and reservations. Shall I communicate with them in reference thereto. What assistance in the way of transportation and supplies can I promise them and to what point will they have to go.
                                                                                                  (Sgd) C. C. Augur
