         The Commanding General directs me to say to you, that if, upon your return from Red River you find no Indians, and think there is no chance of finding any, you can come in whenever you chose.  If, on the contrary you find that it would be advisable to remain until the last of October, and be so doing make good use of your troops, with the prospect of accomplishing something, you will remain until that time, but not remain out longer.
         In either case you will send the troops for Forts Griffin and Richardson, via Fort Griffin, the troops for Forts Concho and McKavett, via Concho; and if practicable the General wished you to come via Concho to these Headquarters.

         Upon your arrival at Fort Griffin, you will relieve the escort under command of Lieut. Matile, to Railroad surveying party and accompany it, until the party goes in for the winter.
         You are expected to assist the surveying party in every reasonable way and consult their convenience in whatever you do, so far as a proper regard for your command will permit.   If at any time your rations should give out, make some arrangements to send in and get your supplies from the nearest post.
