I rode about a mile up the Lake & obtained one from Capt: Pratt, In the evening we crossed in a small Boat, the sea running high & the current strong made it look dangerous, but through favour we landed Safe at the black Rock, on the shore of the United States, and rode along the beach, which with the extensive prospect, rolling & sound of surf impressed our Minds with awfulness--In riding about 3 miles we came to Cornelius Winney's and took Quaters.
9 mo 1 1 Rose early, and set out through the Wilderness for
the Genesee Country about 70 miles distant without any House, the path small and in places very miery and interrupted by logs, tho' in places were extensive plains, high grass & scarce a shrub, in the evening we stopped about half way, at what is called the long plain, but before we could scarcely strike fire, bell our Horses &c there came a heavy thunder gust and rained 2 or 3 hours, almost as heavy as ever I remember, and very dark, we had no shelter except one blanket stretched over a few stakes which J. E. & T.M. occupied, Jacob & I sometimes walked, and at others stood still, mostly silent with reverent thankfulness, and I may acknowledge it was a precious Season to me and I cold not wish
