88 to Judge mens harts, that Belong to God. Secondly I cannot deny, but that many of them Especially that younger sort, that have been & are souldiers, but they are too apt to be ovrtaken with drinke. I could wish they had not so much example & temptation, therunto by som English especialy such as have been fellow soulder in the warr who are very ready (when they meet the Indians) to give or procure strong drinke for them, & others for filthy lucers sake sell them. Strong drink expressly prohibeted by law, Indeed a very litle matter will intoxicate their braines for they beeing used to to drinke watter, they cannot beare a 4th part of what an englishe man will beare. I have known one drunke with as litle as on Eighth part of a pint of strong water & heard with litle more than a pint of cider I do not plead to Justify them in Such actions. but Endevr to declare the truth as things are. Thirdly I cannot deny but sundry of the Ch[ris]tian Indians are not of so good conversation as chr[is]tian Religion requires, which thing is matter of Lamentation to all that feare God, not only in respect of these Indians but of the English also; among whom they live, yet not withstanding wee may not presently Exclude them out of visible Chrianity Christianity, But rather Endeavr to convince & reform them, & if God please, to bee instrumentall to correct them & turne them to God effectually; whilst men do externally attend the means of grace, keep the Sabath, pray in their familie morning & Evning & Endeavr & desire to bee instructed in ch[ris]tian Religion both themselves & children there is charitable as the praying my Indians doe.
