82 this was the projection of the undertaking at the first & accordingly matters were prepared & carriages with - provisions & tooles sent away to merrimacke River.. But behold Gods thoughts are not as ours word crossed out nor his waies as ours. For just as these Indian Souldiers were ready to march.. upon the 21 of Aprill about midday Tydings came by many messengers, that a great Body of the enimy not less as was Judged than foeten hundred (for the enimy to make their force seeme to be very great there were many women among them they had fitted with peeses of wood cut in the forme of guns which those carried & were placed in the center): had Assaulted a town called sudbury, that morning & set fire of sundry houses & barnes of that towne. this towne is about 18 miles from Charlestowne westerly: giving an account that the people of the place were greatly distressed & earnestly desired succor - indeed (through Gods favor) som small assistance was alredy sent from watertowne, by capt Hugh mason which was the next towne to Sudbury these with some of the inhabitans joyned & with some others that came in to their helpe their was, vigorous resistance & a checke given to the enimy, so that those that were gotten over the river onto the east side of the towne were forced to retreat: & the body of the enimy were repulsed that they could not pass the Bridge where pass the English kept. But those particulars were not knowne, when the tydings came to Charlestowne; where the Indian company before mentioned were Ready Just at the begining of the Lecture there as soone as this tydings came major Gookin & mr Thomas Danforth (two of the magistrates) who were then hearing the Lecture Sermon, being acquainted herewith withdrew out of the meeting house & imediatly gave orders for a ply of Horse belonging to capt prentice troope under conduct of Corporat phipps And the Indian company under capt Hunting forthwith to march away, for the Releese of Sudbury which accordingly was put in execution Capt Hunting with his indian company being on foot Got not to Sudbury untill a litl within night.
