56 1675 About the fifth of february a petition from the wamesit indians (Living neare Chelmsford) was presented to the council, by the hands of Jerathmiel Bowers (one of their Guardians, - the purpose whereof was, to desire earnestly that they might bee removed from the place where they were, declairing they feared to stay words crossed out because (in all prability) other indians would come & doe mischief and it would bee imputed to them & they should suffer for it, the Council answered their petition that they would endevor to remove them speedily, But their was greater delay about it than was intended, by reason of divers other momentous ocasions intervening; So that which a few dais after, those poore indians of wamesitt (finding themselves in great danger beeing threatnd by their English neighbors), they ranne away in the woods towards pennakoog only they left behind them six or seaven aged persons blind & lame, which not long after were destroyed, by some cruel & wicked men, in a secret manner who set fire of the wigwam where they kept & burned them all, the authors of this fact were not openly known nor so as clearly witnessd thereof as to proceed against them suspected strongly to bee the actors one of whom shortly after was slaine at Sudbury, the other is yet alive who (if guilty) which his owne consience knows, the Lord give him Repentance for the so inhumane & Barborous fact or else undoubtedly by the just God will in due time avenge his inocent Blood; This fact when heard of was decryed abhord by all sober persons Those poore ch[ris]tian Indians of wanesitt escaped cleare away words crossed out & joyned themselves with wannalenset who had withdrawne himselfe in the beginning of the war
