the law by which it shall be partitioned out among the human family, who are all, equally, His creatures. Has he anywhere ordained that tillers of the earth, planted by His hand in one quarter of the world, shall have a right to cross the ocean which he has cast around them, as a barrier, pass over to another quarter of the world, and expel or subjugate such of their brethren as they shall there find in the hunter or the Shepherd state? The question is not whether they may not innocently, nay meritoriously, become instruments in the hands of the Almighty in civilizing and christianizing these their fellow creatures: but whether they may rightfully drive them out from the possessions which the Lord has given them, or bring them under their own yoke for the sordid purpose of enriching and aggrandizing themselves? Is there any such warrant in the revealed Will of God? -- The author thinks there is, because of the great command strikeout given to our first parents to "be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it: but how were they to subdue it? The same text explains, for it does not stop where the author's quotation stops. The whole text runs thus -- "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth & subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living things that moveth upon the Earth." (Gen: 1. 26) The order to subdue is here explained in the clearest terms by that dominion which was to be the fruit of obeying the order; it was to give them dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every thing that moveth upon the earth. The whole brute creation had been previously formed: the sublime work was crowned by making man & woman, whom, in this command, the Almighty thus places at the head of the creation, and assigns to them the dominion over every other living creature.
