"In 1764 an Indian from the west of the Mississippi, who had never before seen a white man, related to an intelligent clergyman as one of their traditions, that a great while ago they had a common father, who lived towards the rising sun, & governed. That all the white people's heads were under his feet. That he had twelve sons by whom he administered the government. That his authority was derived from the Great Spirit by some special gift from him. That the twelve sons tyrannised? over the people, & greatly abused their power, & offended the Great Spirit, who suffered the white people to introduce ? liquors amongst them, which was followed by ? consequences, & by their ? to the white people. But that they had a tradition, that the time would come when the Indians would regain the gift of the Great Spirit, & their ancient power, when the white people would be in ? to them." Haywoods? ab.
