"The moon, or generative power, supposed to be the supplier of all the juices essential to animal existence and nourishment, was worshipped in ancient times all over the world, and was represented with a crescent, or horns, upon her head, to denote the horns of the moon. The greatest obscenities were practised at all her? temples; at Babylon, at Aphek, at Alasbech?, and other places. In Egypt, she was worshipped under the name of Isis; by the Greeks & Romans, she was called Ceres; in India, the productive power; by the Ephesians, she was called Hecate, Trivia, Hebe, Luna; - by the Carthagenians she was called Celeste, Urania; - by the Scythians, Artemposa; and by the Egyptians, sometimes, Atar. In Mexico was a temple dedicated to the generative goddess; a lively indication that the principles and objects of the Mexican worship were the same as in the ancient countries just mentioned." 363.
