The cave forked. In the right fork, which was the largest, was a well or shaft sunk 14 feet deep & four feet wide, from the bottom of which the digging had been extended in one direction more than 20 or 30 feet, to which it had been followed. Here, it is supposed, ore was once dug. One piece of ore was found near the mouth of the cave, containing lead & silver. The cave was at the foot of a hill. Upon the hill had been a large town and burying place. On the top of the hill, too, were several piles of rocks, which being opened, discovered human bones of the common size, & with them was found an ivory button, an inch wide & perfectly round, well executed, with a hole in the middle, and about the eighth of an inch thick, very smoothly polished, and cut with some iron tool. The bones are very ancient, and the trees near them as large as any in the forest. Ivory, it is well known, is made of the tooth of the elephant, which lives in the southern part of Asia and in Africa. It has been sometimes made in Russia, of the tooth of the mammoth." 167.
