"Mr Clifford, late of Kentucky, had in his lifetime, a pipe which was found in digging a trench on Sandusky river, in alluvial earth, six feet below the surface. The ruin of the bowl is in high relief, and the front represents a handsome female face. The stone of which it is made is the real tale graphique, exactly resembling the stone of which the Chinese make their idols. No tale of this species is known to exist on this side of the Alleghanies. This article, of course, must have been brought from a distance, probably from China, or its neighborhood". 364
