  "The Indians being instigated by the infernal policy of the British Government, commenced their customary depredations.  The people of North Carolina & Virginia sent such troops as they could spare, who were aided by the people.  In this year, a fort was built at Gillespie's, above the mouth of Big Limestone, another called the Wommack fort, east of the Holston, above the mouth of Watauga, ten or twelve miles.  The Virginians built a fort at Heaton's station.   Evan Shelby erected one on Beaver Creek, and John Shelby built one on the Holston.  The united settlements elected John Sevier, Carter, Womack & John Hill, delegated to the convention that established the district of Washington."  "In June 1776, a battle was fought between the combined forces of the inhabitants and the soldiers from Virginia and the savages, at the Long Island Flats.
