113 1759 "The principal cause of this war" (which commenced in 1759) was, the taking of some horses by the Indians, which belonged to the Virginia settlers; to replace those which the Indians had lost during the preceding war with the French, whilst acting as our allies. The white settlers reseized their horses, and either killed or made prisoners of many who were unconscious of having committed any offence. The impolicy of this step soon became manifest, for an Indian war with all its horrors, was the immediate consequence."
