1756 "A Treaty was made with them" (the Cherokees) "and the Catawbas, by a commissioner appointed by his excellency Arthur Dobbs, the Governor of North Carolina. It was required by the chief of each nation, that a garrison should be established in their respective territories, for the defence of their women & children, should their warriors be called out as allies to the English against the French, and northern Indians. In conformity to the stipulations, Fort Loudon was built and garrisoned the year following. The Indians, to induce artisans to settle among them, made donations of land." Tenn. Gaz:

"Although hostilities had commenced in 1754, yet no formal declaration of war was made till May 1756, when it was proclaimed by the British king in the usual form. Lord Loudon was appointed governor of Virginia & commander in chief of the forces in America." Web: U:S: 189
