1660 "It was deemed essential to the safety and even existence of the French settlements in Canada to humble the Iroquois Indians. Measures were accordingly taken with a view to extirpate that powerful nation. The Indians being supplied with arms & ammunition from New York, then a Dutch colony, were enabled to make a vigorous defence during the four subsequent years, while the war in the meantime was carried on with much spirit on both sides."
