In ancient times, there was a kind of Preasts Prophets or Doctors, which was called in the Miami language Powees. It was their duty or custom to visit the home or lodg of each family in the village every morning at sun rise, and state to them, his opinions respecting the course they should perform during that day.

  Those supposed inspired persons, generally act as Doctors, and it is not uncommon for them to extract  ^  from the body or joint of their patients a hair ball, or the beard or whisker of some wild animal, or the whisker or beard of a Panther, Cat or woolf; (or at least make their believe so). 
   At this period of life, those Doctors are not so numerous as in former years; nor are they so much respected by the Indians generally, 
   The present Shawanor (sic: Shawnee) Prophet, the:strike-through brother to the celebrated war chief Tecumseh is the only Indian of the above description that is at this day, venerated or respected by the Indians.
