325 unclear His Excellency Shaw Ross Red Clay CM Oct 23 1835. Principle Chief of the Cherokee Nation, The undersigned Agents respectfully repent: That they proceeded without delay after the appointment was filled by your Excellency, occasioned by the non acceptance of Capt: D McMain, to the discharge of their duties under a resolution of the called Council of May last, commencing in Chattaoochy at May: Geo: M: Corters on the 3oth of July and continued until the 14th day of August, when JJ Trott and E Hicks were captured by the Georgia Guard, on a detachment of them, under the command of W. L Lowry while they permitted R. Rogers to pass unmolested, who was equally liable. Our books were also averted from our hands and taken off with the prisoners who were unclear ordered to tak e up the line of march to head quarters, a distance of sisty miles. While on their way unclear to prevent their escape at night they were made fast in strings. On their arrival at head quarters they were kept in concealment and close confinement to avoid a release, over regged mountains, and concealed in a thick forest until the 23rd day of August when they released by giving bond and security for their appearance at Court. Count came on. They appeared for trial, but their names were not called- consequently they were left without a trial. Thus it is that we were unclear from the persecution of our duties as valuing agents. Our books have never been delivered up to us.
