Copy Nashville Oct 13. 1835. Dear Sir, I have just received your letter by W. Currey. I regret very much that I am unable to attend the Cherokee Council, in consequence of my unclear being very painful. My sufferings are so great that if I could even reach Red Clay, I would be unable to render any useful services. I have consulted my physician who believes it would be unsafe for me to go, especially as I am now under a course of treatment which will probably continue for several weeks during which time I must avoid exposure. I have a great desire to be with you but owe too much to myself and family to run the risk of unclear my efflictions. I write in pain, which must be my apology for this short communication as well as for the ommision to write you heretofore. The document you forwarded some time since was published in the Presbyterian. Mr Currey will take with him some members of that paper. The subject of extending our laws in full over the Cherokees, is before the General Assembly and will succeed. So will a measure to prevent the Georgia and Alabama Indians from settling in Tennessee. WIshing you success and expecting to hear from you occassionally I am dear Sir Rev. L. Schermershorn Most Respectfully Your Friend Mr Carroll a true copy Den: F.
