Bishop in the Guard House Square, and learned from him that they would be liberated on the security of Mr Bell, Judge Martin's son in law, who was there & ready to unite with them in a Bond for their appearance at the Courts of the different Counties in which they had been arrested. They were emphatically given to understand that they must ascribe the mercy of Col: Bishop exclusively to the interposition of Mr Bell, for the Col: was determined that the Lawyer's should get no more of the Cherokee money. The Bond was executed & the parties were set free. The Col: offered to supply them with money for their expences home: they smiled & thanked him for his politeness but would not trouble him for his money. Mr Hicks & Mr Trott appeared at Forsyth Court House, the County of Forsyth being the one in which they had been arrested. Col: Bishop was also there. They remained during the Session & were surprised to see the Judges, the Lawyer & the Capt. of the Guards depart, without calling upon either of them to appear. They were informed, however, that the Solicitor General had asked Col: Bishop to show him the law under which these gentlemen had been arrested. The Col: was puzzled and said he had not noticed the law very particularly himself but had relied upon the authority of his Serjeant, Young.- The other gentlemen were ready at Cass Court House, but no call was made upon them.
