1839. Sept 2. Gen: Arbuckle, at Fort Gibson, writes to J.A. Bell & others. The General has received their of the 30th "not clear", en-closing a copy of the decree of the Cherokee convention, under date of Au-gust 21; and he advises them, in an-swer, either to pass into the state of Arkansas, or to come to that fort; in the event of their doing the last of which, he promises them protection, which it would be impossible to do with troops at the houses of the sev-eral persons claiming it.

Sept. 2. George W. Adair & I.A. Bell, and others, write to Capt: WM Armstrong, Acting Superintendant, Western Terri-tory.-The writers send the Super-intendant a copy of a communi-cation from Mr Ross's Convention. They say he will see that the conven-tion have given them until the 4th of this month to come forward and sign the pledge; & that the conven-tion are anxious for theme to "comply with the requisition, it being essential (the convention say) to the preservation of peace, that the life of a citizen shall not be unlawfully endan-gered." - The writers observe that they are told by the convention plainly that their lives will be in danger if they do not comply within the time given. They have been told by some of these conventioners, that a portion of their body insisted upon closing the decree and mar-ching forthwith upon them, without giving them any timely notice of its being
