1839 Aug: 12. continued. whom he addresses with notice, that the western chiefs have appealed to the government of the United States to be sustained in the enjoyment of their rights, and in the execution of their laws, and that the lives & liberties of their citizens may be protected from violence an disturbance.- The General says that it is hoped those whom he addresses will not adopt any measure calculated to obstruct the government of the Cherokee nation, as it existed be-fore the arrival of the late emi-grants, in the due exercise of its authority, or in any manner dis-turb the old settlers, or those that have joined their government, until the decision of the government of the United States is had in relation to their subject. -- This letter covered the communication of Aug. 9. from the western chiefs to Capt: Armstrong, of which an abstract is given under that date. It also covered a copy of a letter from John Brown & John Roger, to Gen: Arbuckle, in which they say that they transmit the re-sult of the deliberations of that Council for the General's information and to show the respect they have for his friendly attention to the peace of their people and the justice of their proceedings in regard to their national affairs.
