This seems to have been a Theocracy. The high priest, called WE, was at the head of all civil and religious affairs. This office was hereditary, desending to the son, or in case the high priest had no son, to his nighest male descendent. He could not marry a widow nor a woman divorced, nor one of bad character, but a virgin, concerning whom there were no civil reports. His wife was much honored, and on the death of the chief priest, she filled his place in some respects till the consecration of his successor: which was attended in the following manner. The next in office to the high priest, was his assistant, or right hand man. On the decease of the chief priest, this man appointed a time for the consecration of his successor, and dispatched his messenger to notify the priests through the nation, giving him a string of wild hemp, braided, having as many knots tied in it, as there were nights previous to the time of the meeting.
