2 206 consulted his divining stone, to determine whether the candidate for the office would live to old age, if the answer was in the affirmative, he saw in the stone (so as it is said) an old man with white hair and a white beard. From all circumstances it seems evident that previous to their acquaintance with Europeans, they had ever worn a long beard; but on becoming acquainted with them, they, by degrees, learned to imitate them, so that fifty or sixty years ago, a long beard, though common, began to appear indecorous, and therefore they commenced pulling it out. They also commenced, as far as I can determine, the practice of pulling out their hair ^at the age of 20 about the same period. That is, a ring round the head about two inches wide, leaving a tuft on the crown, and some also below the ring. This they pulled so constantly that at length it refused to grow and the shave on the head appeared as if no hair had ever been on it. In the same way they made themselves appear beardless.

But the Indians, or red people of this continent are evidently one race of people. This, I presume, no one will doubt, who is in the least acquainted with them. Therefore it is evident, I think, that the Indians are as far from being beardless, as any other race of men whatever.
P.S Mr A Sanders Mr Butricks interpreter whose mother is a full Cherokee, says the above statements are correct & though between 40 & 50 years old says he never found a Cherokee without a beard unless he had pulled it out

The Indians say that red is the most perfect and complete colour, and glory in it as distinguishing them from other people, and showing them to be the direct and unadulterated descendants from the the first man, who, they say was red, made of red earth. This is correct. And if the Indians are the only red people, then it is a fact that they are the only people resembling, in complexion, our first parents. But the jews claim to be the direct descendents from Adam, which claim is substantiated by scripture genealogy. But just as far as they resemble Adam, in complexion they are red. The question then arises why the jews are not red? The reason why Judah & Benjamin are not red is obvious. They have to a great extent, amalgamated with other nations. "one hundred and twenty nine years before Christ John Hyreanus having conquered the Edomites, or Idumeans, reduced them to this necessity, either to embrace the jewish religion, or else leave their country, whereon choosing rather to leave their idolatry than their country, they all became proselytes to the jewish religion; and hereon living incorporated into the jewish nation, as well as into the jewish church, they thenceforth became reputed as one and the same
