47 After kindling this new fire in their houses, each family sacrificed a piece of meat as soon as they had any to offer.

   The men apointed to wait on the seven whippers or cleansers having got seven white sycamore rods gave them to them; lined out: and also the man appointed to wait on the go wa to ka no gi te The whippers taking the rods commenced their business. The leader raised the note aye to which the others responded. Wah. The leader then sang Ihi, Ihi etc. seven times, and then aye; to which the others responded, Wah. The leader then went out of the house followed by the others, and all walked round the house striking the eves, of the treasure house. The leader then putting his stick over his shoulder, went to another house, followed by the other six. Before reaching the house, however, the leader commenced singing as before, just in time to get through before reaching the house. The eves of this house they whipped as they had done those of the council house, and then proceeded in the same manner to another house and so on till they had gone through the whole town and then returned to the council house, and went through the ceremony of whipping the treasure house lined out: that a second time they then entered the council house, took up their rods in the holy place till the next day. On returning to the council house before noon, the whippers took some of the meat deposited by the hunters in the treasure house and distributed it through the town to be cooked for supper.
    When the whippers went out with their sticks in the morning a little after sunrise, the man appointed to wait on the yo wa ti ka no gi sti, stepped into  the middle of the house and called him from his seat, - went to the holy place took his white dress & put it on him, and put a rattling goard, white washed in his hand, and then took his seat While his dress was put on the yo wa ti ka no gi sti, stood with his face toward the east. Having received the rattling goard, he stood a moment in the same position, He then shook his goard, commenced singing you as he
