Now if they were to conquer their enemies the bead between the thumb and finger of his right hand would seem to be alive, and move, but if they were to be conquered, the other bead would manifest the most life. tho if they were to conquer their enemies, blood would be seen flowing down the left side of the stone; and if they were to get whipped, the blood would flow in the right side. But having gone so far, they could not now think of yielding, and therefore persisted, even if all signs were against them. The priest then took the u lu sa tam wrapped it again in the seven deer skins, and gave it to his assistant too carry while he himself put the holy fire in the ark & took personal charge of it. No other person must carry it; and though his assistant carried the u ku sa ta after it had been wrapped in seven deer skins, yet it would be death for him to touch it. And even the priest must always wash his hands after taking hold of it, or the touch of his hands to any other part of his flesh will corrode it like a canker. The provision having been made ready the warriors equipped, and being called to order by Ska. li lo ski, he waved his war club, and told the warriors not to fear, because God would help them if they trusted in Him. They had proceeded but a short distance, when the great chief and his assistant, raised the war whoop, and commenced the war song, and were soon joined by the whole army. Ska. li lo ski directed the march and the encampments, and ordered when to arise in the morning. In marching no one was allowed to speak on any vain or trifling subject, & especially must not talk about women. + If in marching one broke a stick or twig without thinking of it, he must not let it fall, but keep it in his hand till they took up camps for the night. On encamping, it is said that the great warrior, now the Raven went forward two days march & returned the same night. -- During the whole expedition the warriors bathed, plunging seven times, at night and also at day break, in the morning. Suppose in marching they should unexpectedly meet with an enemy. Ska. li lo ski gave the orders of command. All would wait for his direction.
