length. 13 3/4 inches width. 4 3/8 " length of tassle. 9 " depth of fringe. 2 1/8 "

In chapter III we give a picture of "Knife" a Dakota who is fully arrayed for the dance in full dress including the Garters as here shown. the pair [?] from which this sketch is made were not owned by "Knife" but "Angle" a Dakota from Cheyenne City. South Dakota. What kind of an angle this man might have made when he was admitted to the happy hunting ground is doubtful. It is true that in the flesh he was very wide of the mark as to our imagination of celestial creatures however these garters are worn by the Dakota vey frequently and are ever present in the dance. they are made of strips of raw hide wrapped with porcupine quills dyed. of various color. at the top the strips are secured to a narrow band. of cloth or buckskin about one eighth of an inch wide. the bottom of the strips are fastened together by strands of sinew or thread. with a tin cone carrying an orange colored feather. suspended to each. The strips carry some four colors others only one The outer edge. is read and yellow. then two strips all red followed by figure. the center of purple. with a band of orange. and green. about it and conforming in general and line with a filling of yellow surrounding them. The next is a green rectangle with an orange centre Then strips of red. and a second figure like the first and in the center a cross of yellow surrounded by red. When on the leg the cross is in front and at the outer side hangs the tassle. which consists of four long strips of buckskin wrapped with red quills. with a [?] of purple. and the ends finished by tin cones bearing red feathers Attached to the upper band at either end are thongs of buckskin with which it is tied to the leg.
