the family came home. A splendid Wedding and splendid party to escort the bride to her new home. Maria is teaching school. Uncle & Aunt all alone this Winter. Folks there well as usual. Mr. Stevens, Shoemaker died here last week, which makes the twentieth death in town since last March. Is not that a great many for the No. of inhabitants? Mr. white is very low, in Consumption. It has been quite sickly in town, though no prevailing epidemic. Mrs. unclear name, Mr. Stineford & Widow Stanchfield have died quite recently. Mrs. Stineford has requested assistance from the town; and her great lazy boys one of them as old as unclear 2 names was when his father died, smoke their pipes in the corner! You know last Winter there were two Temperance Societies organised in town; a Washingtonian, and an "old Temperance Soc." The meetings of both were suspended through the Summer, but we have now regular meetings of our Society, i.e. the Temperance Band, once a month, & adjoined meetings between. The Washingtonians also meet frequently. We have had several Addresses & shall probably have more. Ezra Barker "held forth" New Years eve, a lawyer Bunchard from N.Y. Major Furber &c. other evenings. Mr. Snow is to be invited to give us an address, I believe. There has been but one violation of the pledge in our Soc. during the year, but some of the members in the other, backslide & repent almost continually. I don't know as I have fervent charity enough, but really I do dislike the Washingtonian principle, as inculcated byunclear and carried out in this town.
