about 3 miles we came to Cornelius Winney's and | |||
took Quaters. | |||
9 mo 1 1 Rose early, and set out through the Wilderness for | |||
the Genesee Country about 70 miles distant without | |||
any House, the path small and in places very miery | |||
and interrupted by logs, tho' in places were extensive | |||
plains, high grass & scarce a shrub, in the evening | |||
we stopped about half way, at what is called the | |||
long plain, but before we could scarcely strike fire, bell | |||
our Horses &c there came a heavy thunder gust | |||
and rained 2 or 3 hours, almost as heavy as ever | |||
I remember, and very dark, we had no shelter | |||
except one blanket stretched over a few stakes | |||
which J. E. & T.M. occupied, Jacob & I sometimes | |||
walked, and at others stood still, mostly silent | |||
with reverent thankfulness, and I may acknowledge | |||
