At the end of the first experimental day
our patient was considerably worse. She had retained most of the fluids she had taken in crossed out: and showed an ^'overall' gain in weight of 3½ lbs, & her poor little face was more bloated and disfigured than ever. This was not entirely unexpected since, according to my theory, I was giving a powerful dose of a substance which was already present in excess. But for me it was hard to bear. Hard to bear also were the cold faces of the nurses. I struggled to maintain a ^'semblance of' scientific objectivity, and we continued our rounds without much discussion.
