Find the inhabitants in quite a scare caused by indian depredations along the Rail-Road. This is why I have been sent here. All the women and children staid in the machine shop two nights and the men still continue to do guard duty at night. Met and had a chat with General Harvey. He is here on duty connected with the removal of "Spotted Tail's" band of Sioux indians to their reservation. He is a very finely preserved old gentleman of the old school - must be 6.4 high, and is a very fine looking and active man yet. | ||

Sept 2nd Not hearing from Major Howland I reported by letter. Find the inhabitants in quite a scare caused by indian depredations along the Rail-Road. This is why I have been sent here.
