About
Midwest Connections is part of What is the Midwest?, a multidisciplinary project challenging the assumptions, stereotypes, and persistent narratives about the Midwest by exploring the confluence of peoples and environmental conditions in the region.
Midwest Connections brings together material and expertise from cultural organizations across the Midwest. The following institutions generously shared their knowledge and selected, shared, and interpreted material from their collections that spoke to the theme of migration:
- Illinois State Museum
- Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Department of Repatriation, Archives and Records
- Mineral Point Library Archives
- Ohio History Connection
- Recollection Wisconsin
- State Historical Society of Iowa
- South Side Home Movie Project, University of Chicago
Midwest Connections also utilizes Newberry collection material and draws on Newberry digital resources, including Digital Collections for the Classroom, Indians of the Midwest, Newberry Transcribe, Mexican Hometown Associations Oral History Project, and Midwest Manuscript Collection finding aids.
The site is powered by Scalar, an open-source digital publishing platform from the Alliance for Networking Visual Culture at the University of Southern California.
Midwest Connections is generously supported by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
