Chicago 1919: Confronting the Race Riots

Images from the 1919 Race Riots

The images below were taken by Jun Fujita, a Japanese-American photographer who worked for the Chicago Daily News during the 1919 race riots. Fujita covered the riots on the ground, and at considerable risk to himself. He captured the raw violence against African Americans and the destruction of lives. These images were digitized from negatives and are presented here courtesy of the Chicago History Museum, which holds the Jun Fujita negatives collection, donated to the museum by Mrs. Florence Carr Fujita in 1964.
