IN THE HOLY FEAST OFSAINT BARTHOLOMEW APOSTLE

For the Feast celebrated in his church in Rome by the Bergamasque Nation

SONNET

Dedicated to the most eminent, and most reverend Lord, Lord CARDINAL PIETRO OTTOBONO PROTECTOR MOST WATCHFUL at instance of Mr. Giuseppe Testorij SACRISTAN

The Saint, while skinned alive, says:

Of sharp impiety inebriated the steels Tracing on my limbs inhumane furrows And raining around me humid pieces To drink tyrannies may the Earth learn.

Idolatrous arms of piety oblivious May this my corps burn to the insane idols; That the profane fires in human tears May be exchanged on profaned altars.

But nay, Corps, that with me was born and lived From those cruel stones the Heaven may remove, And as a trophy of Faith to the asters hang.

Oh, if the Faith, for which I pine in Zeal, Baby in bands still wailed, on her cradle may a Veil be layed.
