essay on Williams and the Proletarian movement for David Madden's collection. But there's a lot of work ahead of me. There are a couple of things you may have answers for sometime (Please don't trouble to reply unless something comes to mind):
1. Williams is said to have been one of the signers of the "Golden Book of American Friendship with the Soviet Union". I'd be glad of details of this book (editor, place of publication, etc.) 1937, I think
2. He is said to have signed a CP statement in 1940 demanding the end of the House Committee on Un-American activities. 3. To have signed a public statement defending the policies and practices of the CP in 1941 4. To have urged clemency for Earl Browder in prison in Atlanta in 1942 5. To have spoken at a rally for three of the convicted "Hollywood Ten" just out of prison in 1951. Paul Robeson was also billed to speak.
I know underlined: so much, but have not a single word of verification! Maybe you've heard of some of these events or documents. With very best wishes, Mike Weaver
