 I have come here to escape the noise and dirt and neon lights of city life, and incidentally to try to teach English and French

to rural hoodlums in a small public high school. It is quiet here, & physically, good for me, I believe. But it certainly is a cultural desert, & not too good for my mind.

 I do not expect to live here too long. Perhaps, or rather, very probably, it will be for this year only.
 Most of Maryland is very beautiful country, & the state as a whole is fairly civilized one. This Eastern Shore, or the "Sho" as

they say, is the most backward part, though it is better by far than it was 20 years ago. Race prejudice is still very strong here, not much different from that prevailing in Georgia or Mississippi or other parts of the Bible Belt.

 For one reason, at least, I am thankful to be here - The winters are mild here. ^In recent Recently I've been unable to stand

Chicago's winters, & I hear that this one of 1951-52 is worse than ever.

 In the day after Christmas here it was very comfortable walking around in a suit coat, now - crossed out no overcoat, no topcoat, nothing.
