Crossed the Little Arkansas & camped on the main river (Arkansas) the water muddy with floating particles of Mica & unclear shallow with a sandy bottom, the river was? 12 or 15 Rods Wide = Distance travelled 27 miles = in our march today we passed through a number of Prairie dog villiages,, they are about twice the size of a common Grey Squirrell with a short tail & they would frequently sit by the side of their burrow & bark (like alittle puppy) at us as we passed,, saw animals we call Prairie squirell ^ or gopher smaller considerable than prairie dogs. our Guard tonight doubled, we are now on more dangerous ground & use greater caution in our advance my watch was from 1 to 3 in the morning
