Feb the 24th 1863 Dear Wife I take this opportunity to let you know that I am well at this time and sincerely hope that these few lines will find you all well we are now in the State of Louisania we are camped in a bout a mill of the Mississippi river on the bank of lake providence we are in Sixty miles of vicsburg I dont think that our forces will attact vicsburg I think the object is to surround the place and cut off there supplies and thus take the place without the shedding of much blood we are camped in a cotton field I think there is over five hundred
