1839 Sept:30, continued. which the General & the Superintendant are instructed upon, are Penown to him: some of them may be of the late em-igrants, or all, for aught he knows: nor does he feel that it is again ne-cessary for him to revive the sub-ject among the people, when the General & the Superintendant are doubtless apprized, that they themselves, in convention, considered & disposed of the matter in a manner satisfactory to the whole Cherokee people. The General & the Superintendant, he continues, express regret " that no union has been formed between the eastern Cherokees and John Brown, Principal Chief of the Westetn Chero-kees"' - The Principal Chief observes that this may be true to some extent, yet that it is equally true that a union has been formed be-tween the eastern and western Cherokee people. To that union, says the Principal Chief, if it has pleased some to withhold their approbation, and among them John Brown, still the people acted for themselves; they are the ac-knowledged source of power in the Cherokee Country, and their original acts require not the sanction of any chief to accredit it with authority.
