Memphis Feb The 16,, 1863 Dear wife I take this opportunity to let you no the I well at this time and hope that these few lines will find you all well I received a letter from you yesterday and was glad to hear from you all once more I hope by the time this reaches you the children will be getting better of the hooping cough well Sarah I have bin washing I have have bin acting washerwomen as women is scarce here well I have not much to rite this time but a short is soon [curried?] I intend to rite or not you sed that your toes almost froze this winter yo must try and not freez your toes -- good advice -- if I have good luck and plenty of it I will try and keep them warm myself you sed you wanted if I got in a fight that you wanted me to fight like a man I expect to fight like a man or run like dog
