his head. As the leader struck the music, and commended the movement, all followed, with every expression of rapture at enjoying the emblem of green shades prepared for the virtuous in the fields on high. They went, leaping and exulting and singing as they ran. Notwithstanding there was an appearance of wildness and disorder, whatever they did was in accordance with long settled rule, and guided by a leader who conducted the whole party seven times during each dance successively around the tree and underneath its shade. Some day that the Eee, Fa, gungh, stah united in this Festival; not, however, with the crowd. He was elevated on a platform, sustained by men. He wore a red cap; a white robe, leggings and moccasins; and his arms were covered with otter skins. The Festival continued four days. At evening, each person's green bough was deposited in a safe place, and taken back next morning. Though the women were excluded from even entering the sacred square during the special dance for the occasion, still, after the boughs were put away at sunset, they might mingle with the men in dances merely social; - wives following their husbands, and single women and girls their brothers, or young men of their own clan. It is this Festival which has outlived all the rest; being the same to this day.
