not for the Levees the land would be completely submerged--Back from the River are the Cypress swamps--the trees are covered with the low grey hanging moss-- Passed about 12 oclock the "Magnolia Plantation" belonging to Mr. Bradins Johnson, it being the largest orange grove on the coast. It Extends 2 1/2 miles along the shore--Mr Johnson also owns two or three more farms between here & New Orleans--sugar plantations--At one oclock today we passed Fort Jackson & Fort St. Philip just opposite
