1714. “St Dennis establishes a port at Natchitoche, & explores the country westward to the Rio del Norte, where he finds a Spanish mission established on the west of Urut river called Fort St John Baptist. The Spaniards had already erected the province of Texas without ever having settled any part of it. In order to defeat this project of the Spaniards, the French built Fort Dent near the source of the Sabine River. Another fort is also built by the French about thirty miles westward of Necogdoches in the country of the Assinai Indians.” Lings Chron: 88.
