1839 Aug:12 continued. Principal Chief of the Eastern Chero-kees. - The Superintendant is ap-prized that Gen: Arbuckle will furnish them with a copy of a communication from the Western Cherokee Chiefs, addressed to him, by which they will learn that the Western chiefs have appealed to the Government of the United States to protect them in their rights and priveleges. The Super-intendant says it is useless for him to call the attention of those whom he addresses to the many in effectual attempts made by others, as well as them-selves, to adjust the very serious and unpleasant state of things existing between the Cherokees. The Superintendant observes, that ax an appeal is made by the western chiefs to the United States, he will withhold their commu-nication, that those whom he addresses may have an oppor-tunity of laying their views & determination before the Secre-tary of war: He, in the mean-time, most earnestly prefers upon them, to use every exertion to preserve the peace & harmony of the Cherokee Nation, and to permit nothing to be done in any way to affect the old Settlers, or those represented by them, in the exer-cise of their laws and priveleges. The Superintendant is informed that the letter from the old [the Western] Chiefs to him, has been sent to his residence, where he is pro-sumed by them to be. He will remain at the fort until Wed-nesday morning the 14th, and hopes those whom he addresses will
